Leopold, the head waiter of the White Horse Inn is passionately in love with the owner, Josepha. She only has eyes for one of her regular guests, Valentine Sutton, a solicitor, who happens to be involved in a business dispute with Ebenezer Grinkle, a manufacturer from Oldham. Sutton falls in love with Ottoline, Grinkle’s daughter. Sub-plots abound …. An engagement as a business arrangement? But to whom?
